Optic disc area and correlation with central corneal thickness, corneal hysteresis and ocular pulse amplitude in glaucoma patients and controls: comment

We read with interest the recent paper by Insull et al.1 in which the authors compared a group of glaucoma patients (n = 38) with a control group of 62 healthy individuals or glaucoma suspects without glaucomatous optic neuropathy. Central corneal thickness (CCT) as measured by ultrasound pachymetry was correlated with optic disc area as measured by HRT II. There was a tendency for an inverse relationship between CCT and optic disc area in the control group (r = -0.22, P = 0.09), and a statistically insignificant association between them among glaucoma patients (r = -0.15, P = 0.36). The authors, then, combined the control and glaucoma groups, and reported a statistically significant negative association between CCT and optic disc area (r = -0.200, P = 0.046).
