Mirror surface finishing properties of plastic mold steels have been evaluated by three methods: specular reflectance, surface roughness and visual examination. The influence of metallurgical and polishing factors have been also studied by two quantitative methods described above. The results are as follows. (1) The grade of mirror surface finishing by specular reflectance measurement agrees with that by visual examination. (2) The influence of inclusions is overestimated by surface roughness compared with other methods. (3) To obtain higher grade mirror surface finishing, mold steels re recommended with higher hardness, clean and uniform microstructure.
