Background: Previously,when free skin grafting was performed to investigate immunotolerance using rabbits in another experiment performed in our facility, promotion of hair growth was noticed in the skin adjacent to the graft. This mechanism is unknown.Objective: The aim of this research was to identify the promoting factor of hair growth in wounds and to investigate the influence of the factor expressed in wounds on the hair cycle.Methods: We focused on the following cytokines involved in wound healing: tumor necrotic factor alpha (TNFa),interleukin 1beta (IL-1beta), interleukin 6 (IL-6),and epidermal growth factor (EGF).The skin around the wound and control region was sampled in Wistar rats, and mRNA was examined from the locality of EGF,TNFa,IL-1beta, and IL-6 extracted from the skin samples by RT-PCR.Murine IL-6 was then subcuta-neously injected into the dorsal region in rats and C57/BL6 mice.Results: IL-6 was expressed in the wound tissues of Wistar rats before and during hair growth in the free skin graft and flap experiments. Similarly, extension and enlargement of hair follicles were observed in C57/BL6 mice that received IL-6 administration at the telogen or anagen stages, and IL-6 induced the anagen stage in C57/BL6 mice with IL-6 administration at the telogen stage.
