So called universal steering vector (USV) whose element is equivalent to array element pattern is applied to the direction of arrival (DOA) estimation by multiple signal classification (MUSIC) algorithm. The relationship between USV and conventional steering vector (CSV) is shown that the USV can be regarded as the CSV compensated by the inverse of the mutual coupling matrix which is a dynamic matrix depending on each searching direction and polarization and includes theoretically all mechanical and electrical errors of array elements. It is obviously that the estimation error of DOA due to the mutual coupling effect between array elements is compensated by using the USV. Simulation of DOA estimation for 6 element dipole and 2 element monopole-PIFA array antenna are carried out to compare the accuracy obtained by the USV, the CSV and the Dandekar's [5] methods. The received voltages are also measured at the terminals of 4 element array antenna consisting of two monopole antennas and two loop antennas on a rectangular conducting plane, and are used to DOA estimation to demonstrate the practical effectiveness of the present method.
