An array processing techniques for passive monitoring and imaging systems that implement the experiment-design-regularization (EDR) method for spatial analysis of the remotely sensed data are addressed. The proposed EDR method assumes limited prior knowledge about the image model but involves control of the experiment-design level degrees of freedom when performing the spatial signal processing. In this paper, we present two new efficient beamforming and spatial filtering algorithms that implement the EDR imaging method applying the antenna array-based signal processing. The first one performs nonadaptive array processing and is essentially an EDR robustifled version of the celebrated minimum variance distortionless response (MVDR) beamformer. The second one processes the antenna array data in an adaptive fashion to optimize the augmented EDR-MVDR optimization criterion associated with the balanced minimum of the systematic and noise errors in the resulting image. Simulation examples indicative of the efficiency of the proposed implementation schemes in application to the remote sensing imagery are also included.
