British Columbia Apple Varieties

The primary apple growing region of British Columbia (BC) is localized in the Okan-agan Valley. The variation in climate from north to south is quite dramatic; therefore, the difference in harvest for a single variety can be up to two weeks from whenit is picked in the south to first pick in the north. With roughly twelve inches of precipitation annually, the Okanagan Valley is suited to growing high quality fruit in a generally low disease pressure region.Presently the bulk of apple production in BC is made up of 12 varieties. And of those 12, only five varieties account for almost 80 percent of the commercial apples (see Table 1).A number of new varieties are emerging in the world each year; however, the varieties that will have the greatest impact on the BC market are still a few years away from planting and production. In the meantime, most new plantings will be improvements oncurrent varieties.Listed below are a few of the current varieties along with some of the other available sport mutations.
