High-Density Planting Systems and Rootstocks for Sweet Cherries in the Northeast 2012 Progress Report

Interest in high-density sweet cherries continues to be strong in New York and other eastern states. The introduction of dwarfing cherry rootstocks has allowed new possibilities for developing high-density cheny orchards with smaller trees that will be more precocious and productive and can either be covered with rain exclusion shelters or high tunnels to prevent rain cracking. In addition, new varieties from British Columbia, New York, Washington and Europe offer the possibility of firmer larger cherries. To successfully make the transition to high-density cherry orchards growers need pruning and training systems that are compatible with high planting densities and will also result in high yields and large fruit size.
