The IFTA rootstock research funds committed to this year's project (year 1 of 2 years of funding requested) are being used to establish research trials during 2010 at twelve geographically diverse growing sites across North America to compare three distinct "state-of-the-art" sweet cherry training strategies for pedestrian orchards. Ultimately, the objectives of the project include determination of training system interactions with three precocious rootstock genotypes as well as diverse environmentalfactors. The pedestrian orchard training systems are based on multiple leader bush (KGB), narrow single leader (Tall Spindle) and narrow fruiting wall (UFO) canopy architectures. The precocious rootstocks to be examined in each of these systems are Gisela 3 (most dwarfing), Gisela 5 (dwarfing) and Gisela 6 (semi-vigorous).
