Mulching as alternative method to chemical weed control in container nurseries.

An experiment was conducted in 2005 to test the effectiveness of some materials as mulches to prevent weed growth in containers, taking into account the economic impact on the crop (Prunus laurocerasus cv. Rotundifolia, Photinia x fraseri cv. Red Robin and Thuja plicata cv. Atrovirens). The tested materials were coconut fibre discs, black biodegradable fabric discs and Gerval (a mixture of minerals that solidifies over the substrate maintaining water permeability).
