Influence of abnormally warm and wet weather on the yield and apparent quality of wheat and two-rowed barley and its related factors in northern Kyushu in 1998.

Abnormal weather conditions in Fukuoka Prefecture, Kyushu in 1998 caused low yields in wheat and barley crops by causing a decrease in the number of spikes and 1000-grain weight in response to a high air temperature and high precipitation during crop growth. In wheat, the deterioration of grain quality was caused by an increase in lodging, scab and preharvest sprouting because of high precipitation. Immature grains caused by a short ripening period also affected the quality. In barley, low grain quality was due to an increase in husk under-development in response to a shortage of sunshine hours around heading date and grain with ventral swelling because of high precipitation during grain-filling stage.
