The directer general of the Japanese Patent Office has recognized the National Institute of Bioscience and Human-Technology (NIBH) as the sole local depository for patent purposes in Japan. The NIBH accepts fungi, yeast, bacteria, actinomycetes, animal cell cultures and plant cell cultures, except dangerous ones and P_3 and P_4 level transformants. Deposited microorganisms have been periodically tested for viability.Animal cell cultures have been tested for mycoplasmal contamination by indirect DNA-staining methods. As a result, it was found that the rate of mycoplasmal contamination in 1,814 animal cell cultures was 12 percent.
