A survey of the contents of heavy metals in blended feeds, feces and composts of swine.

The heavy metal content of blended feeds, swine faeces and composts was investigated in order to evaluate the behaviour of heavy metals in the feed-animal-soil cycle. Copper, zinc and manganese in swine faeces originated from feeds. Some swine faeces and composts contained a very high Cu concentration. The input of Cu and Zn to cultivated soil, derived from swine faeces and composts, was comparable to that of applied Cu and Zn from sewage sludge. For prevention of soil pollution by heavy metals from swine faeces and composts, the addition of inorganic Cu and Zn to blended swine feeds should be restricted.
