Isolation of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus and reovirus type 2 from pigs with respiratory disorder.

An outbreak of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) was diagnosed on a farm of 60 sows in Japan in April 1995. A high mortality was observed in 60- to 70-day-old piglets. Piglets died after showing severe respiratory symptoms. MP examination of 3 piglets revealed severe pneumonia and histopathology revealed non-purulent interstitial pneumonia and perivascular cuffing in the brain. PRRS virus and reovirus type 2 were isolated from the brain, lung and tonsil by inoculation onto MARC-145 and CPK or HmLu-1 cell cultures.
