The halophyte Suaeda salsa was grown in 0, 2, 5,10,15, and 20 mM supplemental CaCU concentrations for12 h/12 h,13 h/11 h, and14 h/10 h of light/darkness under salt stress. The dry weight (DW) of 5. salsa was stimulated by 250-300 mM NaCl without theaddition of supplemental CaCl2. With the 500 mM NaCl-alone treatment, the DW was smaller than that of the plants treated with 250-300 mM NaCl. However, the DW was improved with the15 mM CaCl, treatment compared to 500 mM NaCl alone. These results showedthat15 mM CaCl2 ameliorated the growth of S. salsa at 500 mM NaCl, suggesting that S. salsa can grow sufficiently with the addition of suitable calcium under high-salt conditions such as 500 mM NaCl. Flower buds appeared in the12 h/12 h and13 h/11h daylengths but not in the14 h/10 h day length. The flowering date tended to be delayed as the light period became longer. No extreme delay of flowering due to NaCl concentration was observed. The pollen fertility in the flowering treatments exceeded 90%. These results suggest that S. salsa can grow well under high-salt conditions without a delay in flowering.
