Use of the Geographic Information System in relation to Forest Management practices atthe Tokyo University Forest in Chiba

Growing public concern, in an aspiration to manage forest resources in a sustainable manner, put an additional pressure to forest management practices and resulted in increased information needs. Required is an updated and well developed information system. Traditional Forest inventory is a time consuming process and in our study we are finding the way to improve it while reducing its cost within the same or more accurate results achieved. Regular Forest Inventory at the Tokyo University Forest in Chiba is held in a 10 years cycle since its establishment on 1894. Large amount of data is available on artificial forests which cover approximately 37% of total forest land. Different methodology and Forest Inventory systems were used in a concern to collect required information. This time Forest Inventory information will be obtained by observations and measurements on: remote sensing sources (forest classification/stratification, mapping and area determination), in the field (detailed information aboutforest conditions and timber quantities and qualities). The Geographic. Information System (CIS) is used as an Information System, it can store and manipulate great amount of data in order to improve Forest Management practices as well as Monitoring and Forest Inventory systems.
