During the last 40 year period the Korean layer industry showed a tremendous growth. Animal husbandry in Korea was traditionally small-scaled and represented by back-yard farming until mid-20th century. As per capita national income increased since early 1970's animal industry began to grow rapidly. During the early growth of the industry poultry was the major species leading the whole animal industry. Although the leading species was replaced by swine after wards, poultry industry still grew consistently. The Korean poultry industry is currently confronted with a critical problem. During the period of closed market farmers had to compete only with the fellow farmers within the country who were running their farms under more or less the same situation. However, competing with farmers worldwide in the open market is completely different situation. It may be useful to review the history and current situation of the industry and to look out on the future.
