Autimicrobial Susceptibilities of Salmonellae Isolated from Animals, Meats and River-Water in Japan

Susceptibilities of 304 Salmonellae against 11 antibiotics, penicillin G (PC), ampicillin (ABPC), carbenicillin (CBPC), cephalothin (CET), tetracycline (TC), kanamycin (KM), gentamicin (GM), eiythromycin (EM), nalidixic acid (NA), chloramphenicol (CP)or colistin (CL) were examined. The bacteria were isolated from animals (eel, carp, Japanese pond turtles, yellow-bellied turtles, cats, dogs, cattle, swine, broiler chickens), meats (beef, pork, chicken meat), and river-water in Japan. The number of resistant strains to TC, CP, ABPC, CBPC, KM, CET, and GM was found in 38 (12.5%) strains. Of resistant strains, 17 strains were resistant to TC and 21 showed multiple resistance to ABPC, CBPC, CET, KM, TC, or CP All the strains were resistant to EC and PC,and susceptible to CL and NA. The minimum inhibitory concentration to the 7 major antibiotics examined varied from 12.5 to l,600< mu g/ml.
