CENTERED ON A main island measuring just over 270 square miles (700 square kilometers), Singapore has one of the busiest ports in the world and its Changi International Airport is an important air transportation hub. Separated by a narrow strait from the southern tip of Peninsular Malaysia, the city-state sits astride a strategic choke point, at the crossroads of global trade between the economic powerhouses of East Asia and the world. However, its small size and lack of strategic depth means Singapore has to adopt an active defense policy and build up a strong military to back that up.
