Flying the F-4 Phantom II with the Hellenic Air Force is the preserve of pilots who perform at the highest level. Combat Aircraft spoke with some of Greece's last 'Rhino' drivers. THE HELLENIC AIR Force's McDonnell Douglas F-4E is perhaps the most extensively modernized member of the Phantom II family, thanks to the Avionics Upgrade Program (AUP), also known as Peace Icarus 2000. This was introduced to the fleet between the late 1990s and 2004, in which time Germany's DASA (later EADS) upgraded a total of 39 HAF F-4Es. Greek Phantom pilots are proud of the fact that they can still 'hold their own' in the present era, despite the advent of modern fighters.
