The development of hydroponics in Korea.

The history of Korean hydroponics is relatively short: hydroponic crop cultivation among farmers has only become popular since 1980. In recent years, Korean hydroponics has developed rapidly and now covers about 500 ha. Hydroponics is supported by the government and official organizations through the introduction of large-scale facilities, self-supply of materials, improvement of nutrient composition, and an increase in the number of cultivated crops. However, farmers engaged in hydroponics have many problems yet to be solved, such as knowledge and technique constraints, costs, environmental pollution, and markets for products. It is argued that these problems will be overcome and hydroponics will develop, establishing techniques for environmentally-friendly and high-quality products, labour-saving management, consultant services, better marketing systems, and increased exports.
