Relationship between cortisol response and stress in ACTH Tolerance test on intermuscular edema of fattening cattle

ACTH tolerance loading tests were carried out on clinically healthy fattening cattle and on the cases in which intermuscular edema were suspected. As the results, the cortisol response was classified into 3 types. In Type 1, cortisol rose from 1.17+-0.28 #mu#g/dL before the test to 5.57+-0.39#mu#g/dL at 30 minutes later, and this became 5.60+-0.34#mu#g/dL at 60 minutes later, and clinically healthy fattening cattle were included in this type. Type 2 showed low response such that cortisol was 0.87+-0.13#mu#g/dL, 3.67+-0.22#mu#g/dl and 4.50+-0.32#mu#g/dL respectively, and cases which showed a slight clinical symptoms were included. On the other hand, in Type 3, cortisol rose from 1.27+-0.19#mu#g/dL to 3.15+-0.67#mu#g/dL, but decreased to 2.50+-0.56#mu#g/dL at 60 minutes later, and such cases were included in which severe clinical symptoms and parital and whole body edema were shown. From the above results, the decrease in the adrenocortical function was recognized in intermuscular edema cases, and this cause was estimated as the successive stresses generated under the long-term Vitamin A and E deficiency.
