It was found that the contamination of vertic chernozem with Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and oil resulted in a decrease in the number of bacteria of the genus Azotobacter; the activity of catalase, dehydrogenase, and dehydrogenase; and cellulylotic capacity and an increase in the phytotoxicity of soil. It was concluded that heavy metals form the following series in accordance with their negative effect: Cr > Pb >= Cu >= Ni. Regional norms were proposed for the contents of Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and oil in vertic chemozems.
