Effect of preharvest calcium foliar-applied and postharvest CO-2 increment on the storability quality of ‘Nyoho'strawberries (Fragaria x ananassa Duch.) were studied. Receptacles after petal had fallen were applied with 150 ppm Ca chelate by a hand sprayer at the rate of 200 liter/1000m-2. Calcium solution was sprayed once a week for 2 or 4 times and tween-20 the wetting reagent was added. Control berries were sprayed with water. Collected strawberries were stored at 0 deg C, either in 8-15 percent CO-2 or in air for 3 weeks, and then transferred to 20 deg C for 2 days. At 0 deg C for 3weeks in CO-2 storage and transferred to 20 deg C for 2 days, berries treated with Ca for 4 times were higher in fruit firmness and ascorbic acid content with 0.66 newton force and 2.79mg respectively, than the control berries. In addition, Ca treated berries for 4 times, significantly reduced the water soluble pectin by 2.72 percent and increased 5.67 percent in hydrochloric acid soluble pectin compared with the control berries. Development of gray mold was inhibited by Ca treatment or CO-2 treatment alone or with the combined treatments. Berries sprayed for 4 times with Ca and stored at 8-15 percent CO-2 concentration showed greater quality and maintained its fruit hardness and delayed mold development.
