A mutated sectorial chimaeric flower colour variant was obtained by gamma-irradiation of cormels of Gladiolus cv. Traveler. The variant had two flower stalks in which the florets of one had pink perianths, whereas the florets of the other had pale pink perianths. Ovary culture was carried out in order to isolate plants with a fixed flower colour. Regenerated plants from ovaries of pink florets produced pink flowers. Thirty-five plants out of 52 regenerated plants (67.3%) from pale pink florets produced pale pink flowers, but 17 plants (32.7%) reverted to the original pink colour. None of the regenerated pink or pale pink plants had sectorial chimaeras, and no changes in flower colour occurred among 63 vegetatively propagated plants obtained from pale pink plants. It is concluded that shoot regeneration from callus tissue of ovaries is effective in isolating plants of fixed flower colour from sectorial chimaeras of Gladiolus cv. Traveler.
