Somatic embryogenesis from the stem tips of cormels resulted in flower colour variations among regenerated plants of three Gladiolus cultivars. The highest frequency of somatic embryos (51.1%) was induced on Murashige & Skoog medium supplemented with NAA at 5 mg/litre. Varietal differences in somatic embryogenesis occurred; Topaz and Traveler formed more somatic embryos than Hector. Flower colour variants originated among regenerated plants grown in the field, but no chimeric change occurred in thefloret and in the flower. The frequency of flower colour variation differed among the cultivars; variations were observed in Traveler and Hector, but not in Topaz. Flowers of variants displayed a paler or deeper shade of the colour of the original cultivar. Variants of Traveler were generally smaller in stature with a slightly shorter spike and fewer, smaller florets than the original cultivar. The flower colour of a few variants reverted to that of the original cultivar when the plants were propagatedvegetatively. It is suggested that these variations in flower colour might be useful in developing new Gladiolus cultivars.
