Explants of outer tissue (OT) excised from protocorm-like bodies (PLBs) of 2 Cymbidium cultivars produced PLBs on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium without plant growth regulators and on MS medium supplemented with benzyladenine (BA) and alpha-naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA). PLB production was best (PLBs produced from 77.5% of explants) in Cymbidium Thanksgiving cv. Nativity on MS medium supplemented with 0.5 or 5.0μM NAA plus 5.0μM BA, and in Cymbidium Lucky Rainbow cv. Lapine Dancer on MS medium supplemented with 2.5μM BA (73.7% of explants). NAA alone suppressed PLB formation in both cultivars. PLBs formed faster on MS media supplemented with BA or a combination of BA and NAA than on a medium without plant growth regulators. BA promoted formation of small sized PLBs, whereas NAA suppressed PLB formation. However, once PLBs were formed, NAA tended to increase their size.
