The Atlas of Cardiac Surgical Techniques [1] edited by Frank W. Sellke and Marc Ruel is a new addition to the Surgical Techniques Atlas Series. Forthcoming books in the series include atlases on endocrine, breast, upper gastrointestinal, thoracic, minimally invasive, pediat-ric, trauma/emergency, colorectal, and hepatobiliary surgical techniques. There are no CDs included with the hardcopy of the atlas. This first edition of The Atlas of Cardiac Surgical Techniques, published in 2009, aims to provide a state-of-the-art update on all main cardiac surgical techniques performed today. Editors Frank W. Sellke and Marc Ruel are nationally and internationally reputed and have chosen a group of authors with authority in fields selected for each chapter. The intended audience includes practicing surgeons, surgical residents, and medical students. The book is divided in five sections covering basic techniques, operations for coronary artery disease, operations for valvular heart disease, operations for aortic disease, and miscellaneous operations. Sections consist of two to 10 chapters, each providing bullet-point descriptions of contemporaneous cardiac surgical procedures. Each chapter gives a well-organized, step-wise approach to each procedure divided into surgical anatomy, preoperative considerations, operative steps, postoperative care, and pearls and pitfalls.
