In recent weeks the Department of Health in the United Kingdom (UK) has published its white paper (Department of Health, 2010) announcing its commitment to introduce new arrangements for the commissioning of education and training of the healthcare workforce in the National Health Service (NHS). Whilst the paper itself contains little operational detail, as one might expect, there are sufficient outline proposals to stimulate the juices of even the most policy-averse health professional. The impacts of the white paper are far reaching and will certainly test the mettle of commissioners, providers, schools of healthcare and other providers of healthcare education. The historical differentiation and ring fencing of economic resources to support the education and professional development of pre-registration and post-qualification staff appears to be placed in a rather more free market scenario, with the possible inclusion of private universities and private companies tendering for business.
