This paper reports on a qualitative study investigating patients' opinions of the British Orthodontic Society orthognathic DVD and how useful they found it in their own decision making. The paper addresses one of the most important aspects of orthognathic practice: informed consent and patient decision making and, as such, the findings have much to offer clinicians involved in the provision of orthognathic care. A qualitative approach is ideal for a study of this type where patients' perceptions are sought. Qualitative research is often seen as the 'poor relation' to traditional quantitative research and it is good to see qualitative studies being recognised and accepted more widely in orthodontic journals.
