Coetzee et al [1] present a worryingly adversarial picture with respect to the interaction between those charged with the management of military units and those responsible for maintaining the health of individuals witliin those units. In their article, txiey postulate that perennial military medical dilemmas result from incompatible decision-making models. Whilst no-one with any experience of military medicine would doubt the difficult ethical backdrop to daily practice, it may have less to do with the inherent characteristics of the doctor versus commander paradigm than the authors suggest.
