Development of Submerged Nozzles that Generate Swirl Flow

It is well known in the field of continuous casting of molten steel that it is effective for improving the quality of continuous cast semi-product to swirl molten steel in a mold. At present, the swirl flow control technology of molten steel in the mold by the electromagnetic force, for instance, an in-mold electromagnetic stirrer is widely applied. On the other hand, there are many investigations on the shape design of submerged nozzle giving a swirl flow to molten steel in the mold without any electromagnetic device. Making the submerged nozzle for bloom and billet the subject of the development, the authors studied dimensions of the outlet bore by using a water simulation model, and it was confirmed that the stable swirl flow could be realized without any electromagnetic device.
