Examination of Infiltrated Compounds in Basic Bricks Used in Rotary Cement Kilns

The raw materials and fuels used for manufacturing cement contain alkalies, sulfur, and chlorine, and chemical compounds of these substances, which infiltrate (penetrate) into the basic refractories used to line rotary cement kilns. These phases infiltrate as gases or liquids during kiln operation, react with the components in the refractory bricks, and fill the voids/pores in the refractory structure. These phenomena are well-known based on various case studies on used bricks, as presented at the Symposium on Refractories for Rotary Cement Kilns, under the auspices of TARJ and others.
