PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject basic brick excellent in cement coating properties, mechanical characteristics and corrosion and thermal shock resistances by including a respective specific amounts of lime, silica and an iron oxide in a magnesia aggregate in a magnesia-spinel-based basic brick containing a prescribed amount of a magnesia component. ;SOLUTION: This basic brick for a cement baking kiln is obtained by including 0.5-2wt.% lime 2, 0.3-2wt.% silica 3 and 0.2-1wt.% iron oxide 4 expressed in terms of Fe2O3 in a magnesia aggregate 1 in a basic magnesia-spinel-based basic brick comprising 50-90wt.% magnesia component. Furthermore, 5-95wt.% magnesia aggregate 1 is preferably contained in the brick.
