For an investigative analysis of the flow/deformation behavior of taphole mix plugged into a blast furnace taphole, it is important to evaluate the influence of temperature changes in the taphole mix. To calculate the temperature changes and temperature distribution in the taphole mix during plugging, the authors investigated the apparent thermal conductivity of green taphole mix by a combination of laboratory experiments and curve fitting. Using apparent thermal conductivities thus obtained, the temperature changes/distribution of taphole mix plugged into a taphole were calculated. The calculated results were evaluated by comparing them with the temperature measurements at the blast furnace. It was concluded from the investigation that the boiling and condensation of volatile matter play important roles in heat transfer in the initial stage of heating. Furthermore, the process of structure formation in the taphole is discussed with regard to the calculation results and possible changes of binder tar properties are addressed.
