In recent years, studies of cement-free Al_2O_3-MgO system castable are actively conduced for the purpose of improving corrosion resistance of the lining for steel ladles and secondary refining facilities. In this castable, curing mechanism by magnesia-silica binding has been reported. However, it is very difficult to adjust enough the setting time and the curing time in this binding form. Many reports have been made regarding the relationship between alumina cement and hardening regulator, but there are few papers about the relationship between magnesia-silica binding form and hardening regulators until now. For this reason, the authors investigated the influence of set-controlling admixture on setting time and curing time of the castable by producing cement-free Al_2O_3-MgO system castable.
