An investigation was conducted on wet-gunning mixes for the upper vessel of RH degassers. The facts that were confirmed regarding the effect of the constituent raw materials on various characteristics of the wet-gunning mixes are shown in Table 7. For a high content of fumed silica, the workability and slag penetration resistance were improved, but there was a negative effect on the corrosion resistance and residual expansion. In the case of high content of magnesia, the residual expansion and corrosion resistance were improved, but the resistance to slag penetration was decreased. And for a high content of alumina cement, slag penetration resistance, and strength were improved, but the corrosion resistance and residual expansion decreased. It was determined that any constituent raw material had a direct effect on the characteristics of the mixes, which increased or decreased based on the content, but the optimum composition was not specifically established in this work. Accordingly, it was considered that the content of raw materials should be determined, using the most important characteristics as the basis for comparison. So in this study, the raw material content was evaluated, based on the following characteristics, listed in the order of decreasing importance workability > expansion > penetration resistance > corrosion resistance. Consequently, a wet-gunning mix that had good workability and expansion properties, which was not inferior to bricks, but equal to castables in corrosion resistance, was obtained. It is expected that the developed composition will be used in the field.
