Wits mining and the SAIMM initiate development of a Code for the Valuation of Mineral Properties

The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM) was recently invited by its Australian counterpart (AusIMM) Conference in Sydney, held in October 2001. The AusIMM Code for the Valuation of Mineral Projects, VALMIN, has set a benchmark for the development of Codes in this important subject. Alastair Macfarlane, Senior Lecturer in the School of Mining Engineering at Wits University, who prepared a paper on this subject which was published in the SAIMM Journal, volume 102, no. 1, January/February 2002, commented, 'The purpose of such a Code is to set standards, protocols and guidelines for valuation of mineral properties, so that there is a commonality of approach worldwide, in this matter. At Wits Mining, we are involved in a considerable amount of relevant research at present through the newly established Mineral Resource Management Group'.
