摘要

Many bacteria are able to communicate through a process called quorum sensing. This process is mediated by small signaling molecules termed autoinducers and enables bacteria to coordinate gene expression in relation to population density. The autoinducer-2 (AI-2) synthase, LuxS, is widely spread in the bacterial world and AI-2 has therefore been postulated as an interspecies quorum sensing signal. However, LuxS is also an integral component of the activated methyl cycle in bacteria and a signaling role involving AI-2 is not yet described for all bacteria producing it.
