Crushing of limestone to desired fineness is an essential technological necessity for producing good and uniform quality of sinter in the sintering plant. In the sintering plant if the flux crushing is poor i.e. if oversize (+3mm) is more, low strength friable sinter is produced due to inadequate contact between flux and gangue material and if crushing is too fine i.e. if-1 mm fraction is more, then productivity of sintering machine comes down due to low permeability and higher pressure drop. The performance of hammer crushers is judged mainly by, two factors - namely by desired fineness of crushing and life of one set of hammers between changing. Apart from quality, chemical composition and preparation (casting, forging, heat treatment etc.) of hammer material, the kinetics of hammer rotation, dynamics of hammer and material impact and kinetic factors like depth of penetration of material into striking faces of hammers play a vital role with respect to efficiency of crushing and life of hammers.
