EVALUATING THE QUALITY OF COALS AND COKING CHARGES BY IR SPECTRAL ANALYSIS

The main consumer of coke at Chelyabinsk Metallurgical Corporation is in blast furnace production. Raising coke quality is particularly important under conditions where there is a need to reduce the specific coke consumption in producing cast iron. Particular importance attaches tothephysicochemical properties of the coke, which are determined by the raw material. At present, the raw material for coke and chemical production at Chelyabinsk consists of coals from the Kuznetsk basin, which are petrographically inhomogeneous and have unstable grades; there is a tendency to a reduction in the amounts of coking coals of grades Zh, KZh, K, and KO and increase in the proportion of coals with low technical value: D, DG, G, GZhO, SS, TS, and T. There is a shortage of information on the quality of the coal concentrates supplied for coking as determined by technical and plastometric analysis. One does not obtain an objective evaluation of the technological properties of coals with varying grades and composition as used in charges for coking by using the mean values of the quality parameters. Any increase in the number of grades in a coal concentrate results in a considerable number of mixtures having identical mean values for the basic quality parameters (R_m, SIGMA OK, V~(dqf) y). However, this does not mean that the technological properties of such mixtures are identical or that their coking behavior is the same. They differ appreciably in the capacity to accommodate lean components, as well as in coking index and the yield of chemical products. The proper formulation of the charges becomes much more complicated. Existing industrial conditions require accelerated analysis and more prompt monitoring on the quality of coal concentrates and the grade compositions of them.
