摘要

Carotid artery angioplasty with stent placement has become a viable alternative treatment for carotid artery occlusive disease. The main risk associated with this treatment is periprocedural stroke or asymptomatic brain infarction resulting from embolization of debris during predilation, stent placement, and postdilation of the carotid artery stenosis. The goal of cerebral protection devices is to prevent or minimize embolization to the brain, and a variety of these devices, including proximal and distal balloon occlusion devices, distal filters, and proximal protection devices with flow reversal are used for that purpose.
