Endovascular management of acute infrarenal aortic thrombosis caused by heparin-induced thrombocytopenia in a patient treated with low molecular weight heparin.

We report the successful endovascular management of an acute thrombotic occlusion of the infrarenal abdominal aorta caused by heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT) in a patient treated with low molecular weight heparin (LMWH). Our institution does not require institutional review board approval for the publication of retrospective case reports such as this.A 5 5-year-old morbidly obese woman presented to the emergency room with severe bilateral lower-limb ischemia with complete paralysis and loss of sensation. She had previously experienced two episodes of pulmonary embolism, the most recent being 1 month before this presentation. The latter episode of pulmonary embolism had being treated with therapeutic doses of enoxaparin sodium (Sanofi Aventis, Bridgewater, New Jersey).
