AS the incidence and morphology of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) at the time of diagnosis, and the importance of nephron sparing, have evolved over time, so has the treatment of choice. Radical nephrectomy, which was introduced in 1969 (1), is gradually being abandoned in favor of nephron-sparing surgical treatments that aim to preserve renal function. Partial nephrectomy (laparoscopic when feasible) introduced in 1990 (2) is the current reference standard, occasionally supplemented by laparoscopic or open cryoablation, itself introduced in 1995 (3). Image-guided, percutaneous ablative modalities such as radiofrequency (RF) and cryoablation have become increasingly popular as primary treatments in certain patient groups such as those with multiple or bilateral tumors, predialysis patients, patients who are not operative candidates, and those with syndromes that predispose them to metachronous lesions. The Society of Interventional Radiology (SIR) Foundation has identified image-guided, percutaneous ablation for RCC as an emerging research priority and convened a multidisciplinary research consensus panel (RCP) charged with recommending a prioritized research agenda. The proceedings of the RCP meeting held on April 26,2010, are detailed herein.
