SYMPTOMATOLOGY OF MULBERRY RUST AND THE MORPHOLOGY OF ITS PATHOGEN, AECIDIUMMORI BARCLAY

The occurrence of mulberry rust is reported to occur for the first time in Zamboanga City. Symptoms of the disease consist of formation of distinct bright yellowish orange aecia along the veins and lamina of the affected leaf, any portion of the stem,petiole, peduncle and flower. On stem, affected portion become hypertrophied. Aecia hypophyllous or epiphyllous, erumpent, sub-epidermal, scattered or aggregate; peridia well-developed,; aeciospores globose to ellipsoid, verrucose, catenulate. This study is the first attempt to describe morphologically the causal pathogen of mulberry rust in the Philippines.
