Catheter-associated deep vein thrombosis of the upper extremity in cancer patients: Guidance from the SSC of the ISTH

Scope: Upper extremity thrombi are frequently diagnosed in cancer patients with central venous catheters. A number of complications arise in the setting of a catheter-associated upper extremity thrombosis, including the development of pulmonary emboli, recurrent thrombosis, post-thrombotic syndrome and infection. As the management of catheter-associated thrombosis is often problematic, the ISTH Scientific Subcommittee on Hemostasis and Malignancy developed this guidance document in order to provide a concise review of current literature and to establish consensus guidance statements relevant to the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of catheter-associated thrombosis in the cancer population.
