At the Markokhim Company (Mariupol' Coke and Chemistry Plant, Ukraine), effluents are treated in coke and chemical production with a biochemical plant built in 1989 to a Giprokoks design. The plant consists of a set of structures for physicochemical and biological purification built as ground-level welded steel tanks and reinforced concrete constructions. The aeration tanks were equipped with tubular air suppliers. At present, the biochemical purification (BCP) receives on average 100-120 m~3/h of effluents with the following pollution parameters (I and II are respectively the minimal and maximal values): After physicochemical treatment, the effluents pass a three-section homogenizer and preaerator of total volume 3000 m~3. The water preparation in the BCP homogenizer before supply to the aerotank involves homogenizing the phenolic water for 20-24 h, reducing the water temperature in the basin by 2-3 deg C, and reducing the initial phenol concentration from 600-800 mg/liter to 200-400. This produces an adequate amount of readily oxidized organic material as a nutritive substrate for the active mud in the aero tanks.
