China has enormous coal resources. The country currently produces over 1 billion tons/year, much of which is good metallurgical coal. Coke production is over 100 million t/yr. Because this coke has fairly good mechanical and physico-chemical properties, there had not been much incentive to improve coke quality by introducing new coal-preparation or coking technologies. Most coal is prepared using the conventional flowsheets of blend pulverizing or component-group pulverizing. Most coke is made by traditional methods in horizontal batch ovens designed by Giprokoks Institute and upgraded by China Coke-Chemical Project Design Institute in Anshan.
