Electrode pitch is a major commercial product of coal-tar refining and will remain an important raw material for high-quality carbon items for the foreseeable future. The main customers for this pitch are aluminum plants, which use it for making anodes. In order to preserve customer value and thus justify the operation of tar-refining operations, this product must meet the constantly rising demand for quality. Since the 1990s, electrode pitch producers have faced the following problems. With the newer, high-capacity coke-oven batteries having a high level of heating (1000-1100 mm) and longer coking times, coal tar is much less pyrolyzed. Many plants produce tars that have a density of < 1180 kg/m~3 and contain 5-6 and 3 percent of alpha and alpha_1 fractions, respectively. This has caused difficulties obtaining pitch to the standards of GOST 10200-83, especially the requirements for content of alpha fractions and volatile matter (coke residue).
