Formation of a Coal Feedstock Base for Coking to Provide High-Quality Blast-Furnace Coke

We studied Australian coals of the "BHP' firm: Gregory, Black Water, Goonyella, Peak Downs, Saraji, Riverside, Norwik Park and Bulli. With respect to the volatile-matter yield and plastic characteristics most of these coals belong to the coke-forming grades K and OS. The main distinctive feature of the coals studied is the low content of alkali components.Industrial tests involving the most promising types of coal in the coal blend to be used for the coking process in an amount of 20-35 percent instead of leaning Kuznetsk coals and with the partial replacement of Pechora coals of grade 2Zh in coking processes carried out in industrial ovens with the coal blend being charged into perforated cylinders revealed the most promising (from the standpoint of the coke quality and yield) coals of types Goonyella and Riverside.Economical calculations point to the increase of the cost of the raw material and, hence, the cost of coke with the use of Australian coals. However, with force majeure or with the cost of Russian coals being increased to the world level, such calculations should be resumed and made with account taken of the possible improvement of coke quality.
