The quality of the naphthalene fraction (NF) and technical naphthalene (TN) of by-product coke oven plants is specified by TU (Technical Standard) U (Ukraine) 322-00190443-047-96 and GOST (State Standard) 13106-82, respectively. The content of volatile impurities accompanying naphthalene (from here on, only these impurities are dealt with) is specified in the TU only indirectly, by the content of the main substance. The GOST is a little more specific: it specifies the content of sulfide impurities and indole. However, the qualified use of technical naphthalene, primarily for the production of phthalic anhydride, requires more complete information about the content of impurities [1]. In its turn, the success in producing the technical naphthalene of required quality depends in much on the content of impurities in the naphthalene fraction [2, 3].
